Three Pier Bridge

PROVIDENCE, RI

Proposed 2011.

The design of this project by Studio Providence LLC (A collaboration by Friedrich St.Florian Architects and 3sixφ Architecture) sprung from an international competition. Not only did the competition jury choose our design as its winner, the design recently won a prestigious Unbuilt Architecture Award from the Boston Society of Architects and a second award given by the Rhode Island AIA - its highest Honor Award.

The most distinctive feature of our proposal are three piers that are reminiscent of the fishing piers of New England. The piers are covered with three canopies designed to provide shelter over event space, and give a memorable image. In profile they remind us of floating rowing shells. Despite an overall projected cost of $4M which would have made this project fall within budget, amenities such as a hardwood bridge bed and solar heated ice-melt system are provided.
